personality
Minato was orphaned at a young age to a traumatic car accident, where he was the sole survivor. Being a lone child, he was in need of housing and bounced around from family member to family member, no one quite wanting to fully take him in due to not being able to support an extra mouth to feed, or simply just not wanting to. Because of this, Minato turned into a quiet and passive individual, the type to not take up a lot of space and keep his mouth shut. He never let himself quite get too close to those around him as he bounced around from house to house, never wanting to form deep connections that would inevitably be ripped away once he moved away yet again. He didn’t want to be hurt any longer or lose anyone else in his life like he’d lost his parents, and his friends from school. Once he was older, he applied to get a scholarship to go to Gekkoukan High, back in his original hometown, where he’d be able to be in a stable position and no longer be a burden on those around him.
When he was accepted and moved into the dorms, not to mention tumbled straight into his own new little friend group, he decided to try to open himself up more, and actually try to make lasting friendships with those around him now that he was in a position to do so. It also factored in that his new power required Social Links, or connections with others, to grow stronger, so it was a necessity. Despite still being a mostly passive individual in his social life, he does try to strike out and talk to others more often, though they tend to drag him into things more often than the other way around. With how quiet he can be sometimes, it’s easy to misconstrue this as him being shy, but this definitely isn’t the case — he’s just the type of person where “action speaks louder than words” really does apply. He goes along with others and lets them take the lead socially, and shows his appreciation through his actions rather than being super talkative. He is very friendly however, and will support others to the best of his ability, and always has an ear open or a shoulder to lean on for someone who needs it. Minato is incredibly sympathetic, empathetic, and loyal, and will do his best to help his friends when they’re having issues, though mostly in being a gentle guiding hand than an aggressive force.
He can also be a little apathetic to the things around him sometimes, not really caring much what happens to him, unless it directly affects his friends and loved ones. He's kind of bad at saying "no" to things because effort though, and Minato gets wrapped up in a lot of stuff because of this, whether he really wanted to or not. Sometimes he can even be too apathetic to object to obviously stupid ideas, just going along with the flow and letting things happen as they may — letting Yukari drag them to the back streets at night and backtalk the thugs there was obviously a stupid idea, but eh. She wanted to go, objecting would take a lot of effort. That apathy is also tied in with his trauma though, as it’s much easier to care about nothing at all than to care about everything, so so very much.
Also, while Minato is indeed friendly in his own particular way, he is also very closed off when it comes to things that are personal to him, such as how he's feeling. He doesn't like talking about his past or the bad things that have happened to him, brushing it all off as being fine rather than confiding in anyone about his problems, and is very closed off in that regard. He's perfectly fine shouldering the problems of others, but to burden others with his? Nah. Unexpectedly, Minato is also capable of being silly and making jokes, though they're usually so deadpan that you don't even quite realize he even made them at all. He even once performs a stand up comedy routine with a friend at school for his other friends, though only because he was dragged into it without really wanting to, exactly.
Minato is pretty much tired all the time, due to constantly stretching himself pretty thin. He goes to school even when feeling sick, trying to keep up with his studies because of Mitsuru's stern expectations of everyone, so he’s constantly studying and preparing in between hanging out with his friends, and going out at night or investigating Tartarus. For fun, he likes to do things like visit a Karaoke bar, a café, a nightclub, a print club (that thing where you take pictures of yourself and add really cute stickers and stuff), an arcade, and the like. His other favorite hobby is eating, and eating a lot, and often goes with his friends to restaurants when they’re hanging out so he can eat more. In general, he keeps himself really busy, and pushes himself a bit too far — there are times when he gets so sick he’s bedridden for days, and those are the only times he’s ever missed school outside of a typhoon that shuts it down.
While his position as leader of SEES started only because he had access to the most personas and was the only one of the available persona users who had actually successfully summoned his persona at the time they had begun to investigate Tartarus, over time they began to continue to look at him for guidance in most every combat situation, as he time and time again proved himself to be level headed and experienced on the battlefield. Even as the veteran persona users returned to the team, they were all in agreement: Minato would be the one to lead them into battle. He's a quick thinker and extremely intelligent, and is trusted to make calls on strategies and plans both ahead of time and on the fly while they're on the field. Minato also has the benefit of being able to keep a cool head and calm demeanor even when things look grim or dire; he's the only one that's able to act when the train was about to crash during their first full moon mission, as everyone else was paralyzed with fear. Because of his experience leading the team, he has developed very strong leadership skills. Outside of battle, he’s just another member of the team in his mind. The rest is left to Mitsuru, who he considers much more wise and experienced in the leadership role, not to mention the fact she had been leading them before he came along. However, he will help with whatever he’s needed for.
Minato’s most important character trait during the game is probably his resilience in the face of hardship, though. No matter how tough situations become and how terrible things are for him, he always finds it within himself to get back on his feet and push forward. The first example would be his friendship with Shinjiro, and witnessing him sacrifice himself in order to protect another member of their team, a young boy by the name of Ken. Even after watching him die, he still picked himself up and went to school the next day, even when he most certainly didn’t have it in him. In another case, it was the extreme betrayal by the hands of their chairman, Ikutsuki; he strung them all up on crucifixes, planning to sacrifice them in order to bring about the Fall (the end of the world) after revealing that he had tricked them into helping him bring it about — it was only by the skin of their teeth that they managed to get out of that situation alive, and even after this traumatizing event followed by witnessing the death of both Ikutsuki and his teammate Mitsuru's father, he still picked himself back up and moved along. A final good example is his dealings with Ryoji and the coming of Nyx, an event that was supposed to mark the end of all of mankind. Ryoji gave him and his team a choice — let him live and live themselves in crushing fear until the Fall, or kill him and lose all of their memories and live happily into the end. Not only did he choose to let him live, he and SEES went a step beyond even that; they banded together to do their best to stop Nyx, or die trying. Even though they were repeated reminded that attempting to stop Nyx was impossible, they decided they would rather die having tried their best than to die complacently. No matter what the circumstance, Minato perseveres onward. However, that’s not to say that is isn’t deeply sad and affected by all this pain and hardship he’s witnessed, because he very much is — he just harnesses that sadness (with a healthy dose of repressing his feelings behind apathy), and uses it to keep moving forward instead of falling back and drowning in it.
Because of the real, intense friendships he was able to make, and the deep care and love he developed for his teammates during the course of his time at Gekkoukan, Minato chose to make the sacrifice he did to Nyx without a single regret. He wanted his friends to live on happily, he wanted the world to live on happily, and so he sacrificed himself for their sake at the end, knowing full well what it would entail for him. He doesn’t want anyone to cry over him, or to feel regret or unhappiness at his decision — he wants them to move forward with their heads held high, and help improve the world he saved that was so desperate for destruction. This indicates a very self sacrificial nature, where he'll put others ahead of himself in serious situations when it comes down to it.
